Annie & The Caldwells - Can't Lose My (Soul) (12") 2025 (Mint (M))
Annie Brown Caldwell's roots trace back to the Staples Jr. Singers, the gospel group she formed with her siblings in the 1970s. Here she leads a band made up largely of family: her husband of fifty years, Willie Joe Caldwell Sr., on guitar, their sons on bass and drums, and their daughters on backing vocals.
Producer Ahmed Gallab, known as Sinkane, recorded the album at The Message Center in West Point in October 2023. He kept the studio polish to a minimum, preserving the energy and spontaneity of the band's live performances.
The ten-minute title track rides a groove as indebted to disco and deep soul as it is to church music. The Economist named it one of the best albums of 2025.
